Microsoft Receives Quantum Computing Patent

Microsoft filed a patent for “quantum computational systems” back in 2009 and received confirmation by the USPTO yesterday.

What makes this patent interesting is not just the fact that Microsoft has begun covering its bases in quantum computing, which gives this field much more credibility, but its general nature to improve on “prior art” in topological quantum computing. Without a deep dive into quantum computing itself, much of the content covered by patent is confusing enough to make your head spin, but it is obvious that Microsoft is targeting quantum computing functionality in wide range of applications.

The Microsoft patent refers to specific quantum computing devices, including quantum computers, quantum cryptography systems, quantum information processing systems, quantum storage media, and special purpose quantum simulators, all of which are covered in this patent by themselves and in combination with traditional computing systems. Microsoft spends quite a bit of time on cryptography systems and states that “cryptography also would be revolutionized” if computers could “exploit quantum mechanical superpositions”.

In a cryptography application, Microsoft explains that “respective braids that correspond to the plain text and the encryption key may be defined. The key braid may be applied to the plain-text braid to generate an encrypted-text braid. To decrypt the encrypted text, the key braid may be applied to the encrypted text braid to reestablish the plain-text braid.” It is generally believed that quantum computing systems could deliver cryptography applications that are far more secure than today’s solutions.

Ubuntu One for Windows

Canonical has released the final version of Ubuntu One client for Windows.

Ubuntu One is a platform for storing and synchronizing files in the computing cloud. The service offers 5 GB of disk space and allows you to synchronize files, contacts, notes and bookmarks between several computers. Users also have access to the Ubuntu One Music Store. After using all the available space it is possible to buy another 20 GB for 30 dollars a year.

Canonical began testing Ubuntu One for Windows over a year ago. After several months of work the service clients have been adapted to run on Microsoft Windows and now everyone can use them. It is necessary to create a free account to use Ubuntu One. It allows data exchange not only between computers with Windows and Linux but also with smart phones running Android. If you use a smart phone with iOS, you will have access only to Ubuntu One Music.

Hackers may have spent years crafting Duqu

Computerworld – The cyberpunk team behind Duqu may have been working on its invasion value for more than four years, new research of the Virus unveiled Exclusive.

Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab publicized some results now from a current rooting through Duqu products offered by experts in the Sudan, saying that one drivers integrated with the invasion payload was designed in May 2007, increasing the schedule of the gang’s work.

“We can’t be 100% sure [of that date], but all the designed times of other information seem to coordinate to problems,” said Roel Schouwenberg, a person specialist with Kaspersky, in an meeting now. “So we’re hovering towards that time frame as appropriate.”

Schouwenberg included that the May 2007 drivers was most likely designed for Duqu by the team liable for the problems, and was not an off-the-shelf computer file designed by others, because the drivers has not been identified elsewhere.

Other experts have discovered information amongst those used by Duqu that have develop times of March 2008, but real problems have been followed back only to May 2011.

That was also the 30 days that the Sudan-provided products indicated problems took place against an un named goal in that region, according to Kaspersky, which unveiled two distinct efforts — one on May 17, the second on May 21 — to place spyware on House windows PCs.

The first invasion bad because the email information having a destructive Expression computer file was clogged by a trash filter; the second was profitable.

Microsoft has established that the Duqu plan uses a weakness in a House windows kernel-mode drivers — especially “W32k.sys,” and its TrueType well parsing powerplant — to obtain privileges on the affected PC plenty of to set up the spyware.

Although Ms has yet to spot the bug, it has advised clients to eliminate the well parser to secure themselves.

Kaspersky’s other famous development was that each of the number of Duqu problems it knows of used a custom-created set of information designed quickly before the spyware was directed at a goal.

“The variations are fairly slight, but they are using exclusive information tailor-made for each function,” said Schouwenberg. “Each and every invasion had its own command-and-control [C&C] machine, with its area integrated in the information,” he unveiled.

“That suggestions that they’re very business driven,” Schouwenberg said. “They’re very professional, very finished.”

Although Kaspersky’s latest research can vary in some ways from that performed by other safety measures companies — especially Symantec, which was the first to show Duqu’s lifetime — neither Schouwenberg or a Symantec home saw a issue.

“Each safety measures organization has different clients, different acquaintances, and with the constrained giving of products, we may have just discovered the first [Duqu code],” said Schouwenberg.

Windows 8 Developer Preview Release

If you’ve been following this blog, then you know today is a big day for the Windows team. At the BUILD conference we are about to preview Windows 8. There’s a ton to see in the product and so we’d really encourage everyone to check out the available streams on http://buildwindows.com, where we will webcast the keynote. The BUILD conference this week is focused on developers and hardware partners, and there are over 100 sessions (all of which will be available from the link above within about a day of the scheduled presentation time). In that sense it is good to keep in mind that today is the launch of the developer opportunity for Windows, not the launch of a product (and certainly not the launch of new devices).

Windows 8 represents a reimagining of Windows from the chipset to the experience. Since this is a week focused on developers, we also detailed the bold underpinnings of the re-imagination of the Windows platform, tools, and APIs. We will show off the opportunity to build applications for all of the customers of Windows 8, no matter what type of PC they have—from tablets to laptops to convertibles to desktops. We will show the brand new tools that allow you to code Metro style applications in HTML5/JavaScript, C/C++, and/or C#/XAML. The investments you have made as developers in all of these languages carry forward for Windows 8, which lets you choose how to best make use of the Windows 8 system services. We talked about Windows 8 being a no-compromise OS for end-users, and it is also a no-compromise platform for developers.

Many are interested in Windows 8 for ARM processors. Everything we showcased today at BUILD also runs on the ARM-based Windows PCs being created by ARM partners and PC manufacturers. Windows 8 running on ARM will ultimately be available with ARM-based hardware that you can purchase. ARM requires a deeper level of integrated engineering between hardware and software, as each ARM device is unique, and Windows allows this uniqueness to shine through. The new development tools enable you to start today to build Metro style applications that will seamlessly run on x86 (32 and 64 bit) or ARM architectures. Even if you use native C/C++ code, these tools will enable Metro style apps to target specific hardware if you choose. As new PCs become available for testing, PC manufacturers will develop seed programs for developers.

You probably want to try out the preview release—and you can. Starting at 8PM today, Seattle time, you can download all of the code that attendees at BUILD received. This includes 32 or 64 bit x86 builds, with or without development tools. The releases also include a suite of sample/SDK applications and the SDK (please note these are merely illustrations of potential apps, not apps that we intend to ship with Windows 8). The ISOs are linked to from http://dev.windows.com. You download with a Windows Live ID (which you might want to use to test out some of the new roaming features).

Upgrade from Windows 7 installation is not supported for pre-release code; only clean installs are supported. Reminder: this is a developer preview release and is not meant for production. It is not a beta release. We will be updating the release with various quality updates and drivers over the coming weeks/months just to exercise our overall update and telemetry mechanisms.

We’ve got a lot more blogging to do. So stay tuned. This blog continues to be a big part of the development process. Now we have a lot more shared context, and so we expect folks commenting on posts to be running the Preview so we share in the context of the release. Let’s keep comments focused on the topic at hand and we’ll pay attention for potential new topics. We know there will be a lot—that comes from reimagining a product used by a billion people!

Computerized Prison doors hacked with vulnerabilities used by Stuxnet worm

Security holes in computer systems in federal prisons in the United States may actually allow remote attackers to trigger a jailbreak with remote control. The discovery of the worm Stuxnet warned governments around the world on the possibility of industrial control systems to be hit by pirates.

A team of researchers with John Strauch, Rad Newman Tiffany Teague and presented their findings at a recent security conference. He said the project was not so difficult – you just take a little time, some computers to shop online and a basement work area. The idea grew out of research on the work that had previously Strauch.

“”I designed a maximum security prison security system. That is, I did the engineering quite a few years ago and literally on Christmas Eve, the warden of that prison after it was occupied, called me and told me all the doors had popped open, including on death row, which of course sent chills down my spine. So we fixed that problem very quickly. It was a minor technical thing that had to do with the equipment used, but the gist of it was it made me think if that could be done accidentally, what was the extent of what you could do if you did it deliberately?”"

Security in most U.S. prisons are managed by special hardware known as industrial control systems, or ICS. They are also used to control power plants, sewers and other national critical infrastructure. ICS has increasingly targeted by hackers, for an attack on such a system was sabotaged the nuclear program of Iran cyber intrusion 2009.A attacker could “destroy the doors”, by the overhead electrical system that control and lock permanently open, said Mr. Strauch, now a consultant who has designed security systems for dozens of state and federal prisons.

The U.S. Department Homeland Security confirmed the validity of its results, and researchers have already shown that the attack on the federal offices and state prisons and a number of federal agencies.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Review

When the Modern Warfare scion of the venerable Call of Duty franchise branched out four years ago, the electrifying campaign and addictive multiplayer cast a new mold for first-person shooters. In the years since, this formula has been consistently refined, shamelessly imitated, and widely adored, making it one of the defining franchises of this generation. Modern Warfare 3 stays the course, delivering an explosive campaign, breakneck competitive action, and challenging cooperative play. This is an exciting and rewarding game, but the series’ signature thrills have lost some of their luster. Modern Warfare 3 iterates rather than innovates, so the fun you have is familiar. Fortunately, it’s also utterly engrossing and immensely satisfying, giving fans another reason to rejoice in this busy shooter season.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 : Review

The ongoing campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has stopped. Our hero, soap and price, is in poor condition, and the wicked, Makarov, is still at large. It does not take a long pair of back in the race, and soon you jump world in pursuit of your career. You make some inroads in the forefront of turmoil, but the situation is most striking when you take up arms in the conflicts that consume entire cities. From New York to London, Paris, there is no bastion of Western civilization safely and destruction that was visited on these iconic places are visually impressive. As expected, PC gamers get the best end of the agreement with the sharpness and clarity that trump the console versions. The spectacular scenery makes the action more powerful, and the campaign, you mix different fronts around each city to ensure that you can experience the battle from many different angles.

Remote control of air support, fire fights on foot, and a campaign to keep the vehicle sequences of moves in a clip from the city, capturing the rhythm specialist that the date of Call of Duty campaigns so stimulating.

If the campaign of five hours is not satisfying her bloodlust of AI, the special operations mode almost certainly. Back after his debut in Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops offers 16 specific missions that complement the events of the campaign, allowing you to experience new facets of a global conflict in which they are involved. Escorting the stealth fighters of the resistance to blows with an enemy force in a Juggernaut costume, there’s plenty of variety here. Although even the longest of the quests can be completed in less than 10 minutes, several levels of difficulty missions Spec Ops help provide the equivalent hours of hard struggle. And now you can tackle almost all solo missions and make an offer to the glory of the classification. Depending on the quality of your connection, however, the charging time is online co-op can be extended over a minute. It’s a disappointment when you have to wait so long to take action, but once things are underway, the slowdown is rare.

Spec Ops is a great destination for those seeking a challenge surmountable (missions) or the thrill of seeing how far the intelligence and shot (for survival). But the greater evil challenge comes when you take your skills in competitive online multiplayer mode. The action will be familiar to anyone who has challenged a service call on the battlefield over the past four years. Quick action and the reward system of experience points is so exciting and addictive than ever before and some welcome improvements to make it even easier to enjoy. Improvements in the interface that is easy to customize the view of the challenges of cargo and relevant, offering heavy bonus XP. Thirsty for more information on weapons and stats you can use the freedom of the Elite called application service, which can be accessed through a Web browser.

Anonymous says Facebook attack was never real.

Don’t worry Facebook users, the sky is not falling–you’ll be able to update your status and post those Occupy Wall Street photos tomorrow.

Members of Anonymous fed up with reports that the online activist group is going to take down the social network said today that the threat is not real and was the work of one lone member without any support from others in the group. They said it doesn’t make sense to shut down a site they use to get their message out.
